Cold water fish such as Japanese carp (Koi), Goldfish, Saraza and Shubunkin are perfectly adapted for life in an exterior water garden.

INTRODUCTION

Be patient and considerate of your fish's needs. Be attentive to signs of stress, which is a cause of sickness and loss. Introduce them in groups of not more than two or three at a time and wait one or two weeks between each new arrival:

One goldfish per one m2 (10ft2)
and/or one Japanese carp (Kol) per 2.5 m2 (25 ft2).
So, for a pond of 10 m2 (100 ft2), one might choose ten Goldfish or four Japanese carp or five goldfish and two Japanese carp.

HIBERNATION

The fish listed above winter over easily in the pond.  To do this, a small pump (1,200 gallons per hour) or an air pump must be left running from November to March. These pumps are inexpensive to buy and use little electricity.

The water movement created by the pump in the pond stops the water from freezing and provides good oxygenation for the fish. If ever the pond becomes entirely iced over, never use force to break the ice.  This will kill the fish.

Make a hole by leaving the hose running or use hot water to melt the ice and open a small area of the pond, so toxic gaz will escape out of the pond.

FEEDING FISH

Fish find their own food in the aquatic milieu.  You can go away on vacation with peace of mind, they will look after themselves very well. For a more complete diet and to brighten their colours, use floating food sticks produced for this purpose. Feed them 2 times by week maximum.
